City & Guilds Beginners Bookbinding Course

City & Guild Beginners Bookbinding Course 4 Day £500

This 4 day courses is aimed at absolute beginners, this is the first unit of level 1 City & Guild Bookbinding Course.

During the course students will learn essential bookbinding skills and gain experience in the use of materials including adhesives, papers and cloths. The course will cover how to create pamphlet & multi section books exploring a range of sewing techniques, end papers and covering styles. All materials are supplied.

This short 1 day course will introduce students to the basic skills involved in creating a multi signature book. The course is aimed at beginners and participants who have no previous knowledge of bookbinding. Students will leave the course with their own hand bound books. All materials are supplied.

Bookbinding Taster Course 

This 3 hour course will introduce students to the basic skills involved in creating single signature books. The course is aimed at beginners and participants who have no previous knowledge of bookbinding. It is an ideal workshop for groups, team building or a first step into the world of bookbinding. This 6 week evening courses is aimed at absolute beginners. This is the first unit of level 1 City & Guild Bookbinding Course.

City and Guilds Non Adhesive Binding Course

This 4 day course is aimed at students who have experience in binding, and have undertaken the Beginners Course or an equivalent.

Students will learn a range of alternative sewing techniques without using adhesive on the spines of the books. These will include Coptic binding and Japanese stab binding among others. This is a very creative unit to the City & Guild award and students will be encouraged to experiment with different materials and styles. All materials are supplied.

Coptic Binding Course 

In this 1 day course students will learn how to create Coptic style bindings. This stitching technique can involve multiple coloured threads and celebrates the exposed spine. Coptic binding is a very creative and design lead sewing style. Students will undertake two different binding techniques. All materials are supplied.

Japanese Binding Course 

In this 1 day course students will learn how to bind in a Japanese or stab binding style. This techniques involves sewing through a block of paper and creating sewing ‘patterns’ on the spine of the book. Students will undertake two different books one with a limp cover and one with a hard cover. All materials are supplied.

2 Day Bookbinding Course

This 2 day course will introduce students to the basic skills involved in creating single signature books and Multi signature books. The course is aimed at beginners and participants who have no previous knowledge of bookbinding. Students will leave the course with three of their own hand bound books. All materials are supplied.

City & Guilds Photo Album & Slipcase Evening Course

Students will make two photograph albums and explore different ways to include guards to compensate for the addition of photographs. Students will also learn how to make a landscape slip case that fits your album perfectly.

Rebind a Paperback

In this 1 day course students will learn how to rebinding a paperback into a hard back, quarter cloth binding using decorative paper. Students must bring a paperback of their choice and must scan, print or photo copy the title page of the label of their book. Cloth and decorative paper will be supplied.

The Rounded Spine

This one day course will introduce students to the skills needed to round the spine of a book; this techniques involves using a hammer on the book block after it is sewn but before it is cased in. The course can be taken by beginners but is aimed at students with a basic knowledge of bookbinding who want to explore this traditional technique.

2 Day Leather Binding Course

In this two day course students will be introduced to the skills needed to work with leather, some experience of basic bookbinding is preferred but not essential. Students will sew their own book blocks and will have the opportunity to pare a piece of leather to be used as a quarter bound book with decorative paper. The workshop will focus on blade sharpening and different leather paring techniques as well as bookbinding structure.

2 Day Book Restoration Course

Students will learn the basic skills needed to restore tired and damaged books. The course will focus on paper and cloth (leather restoration is more in-depth so we run a course aimed at this aspect of restoration, which we are running later in the year).

Students will undertake a number of processes involved in re-backing and cleaning old books. Dummy books will be supplied to work on.

This course is aimed at students who have experience in binding, and have undertaken the beginners' course or equivalent.

Students will bind two books in leather using different techniques to create each binding. Paring and the care of knives will be a major part of this course.
